Close friends of mine know that about once a year I go on an admittedly somewhat insane Prince bender. It starts innocently enough, like “When Doves Cry” coming on shuffle, and for the next 10-14 days I’ll obsessively throw myself into the mysterious purple world of Prince.
There is always a trip to Zia Records where I try to get as many old Prince CDs as possible for under $20. Last year I made it out the door with 1999, Purple Rain and Musicology. This year I left with Dirty Mind, Controversy and Parade. There is just something so intriguing to me about this strange little purple man (he is only 5’2″). With so much talent, sexuality, mystery and unintentional(?) comedy surrounding the artist formerly known as a symbol, I can’t help but spend my days googling obscure Prince facts (he cowrote most of the songs on Madonna’s Like A Prayer). Seriously, nothing compares 2 him. The best part is that it will take me about a decade to get through his entire history of releases. Since 1978, Prince has released 32 studio albums with more hopefully on the way.
Its a cosmic coincidence that I happen to be right in the middle of one of these outrageous Prince kicks and yesterday he released a new single featuring Zooey Deschanel. “FALLINLOVE2NITE” finds the high priest of pop funk dipping deep into EDM territory with an amusing but somewhat lackluster house-inspired club track. Its a bit of a novelty but still worth a listen.
Long live Prince.
